In October 2021, 3.1 million email addresses linked to accounts on CoinMarketCap, a cryptocurrency market capitalisation website, were discovered being traded on hacking forums. While the email addresses were found to correlate with CoinMarketCap accounts, the method of acquisition remains unclear. CoinMarketCap stated that no evidence of a data leak from their servers had been found and confirmed that only email addresses, without passwords, appeared in the exposed data.
